Our Learn To Row program is designed for the beginning rower. Each class session may accommodate 16 rowers, or 2 boats of 8 sweep rowers; each with its own designated coxswain. Participants have the opportunity to sit both port and starboard in various seats of the boat. Learn To Rowers will spend the first week in their designated boats, but throughout the lessons, will assimilate into club boats. This gives everyone the chance to row with experienced rowers. Participants should have adequate swimming ability. Each participant should wear close-fitting workout clothes, socks, and sturdy shoes (no crocs or flip flops). Hydration is important, so bring a water bottle (no metal, please). Because each seat is vital to the entire boat, please do everything you can to be present at every practice. If you have to miss, please let your coach know as soon as possible.

Physical Requirements:

As you may know, rowing is a physically demanding sport. You will need to perform the following items to succeed through the 8 sessions:

  • Climb up and down stairs – You will learn correct ergometer techniques in our upstairs, un-airconditioned workout room.
  • Hoist boat overhead and carry on shoulder – You will learn how to “rack” and “sling” the 8-person boat which requires all 8 rowers to hoist the boat over the head, lower it to their shoulder and walk it to the river. The boat is heavy and everyone needs to help carry it.
  • Knee mobility and getting up from the ground – Once the boat is on the water, you’ll need to be able to get in and out of the boat safely, which requires knee mobility and possibly sitting/kneeling on the dock.
  • Tread water – We encourage everyone who rows be able to at least tread water as a basic safety precaution.
